New Zealand Has Officially Recognized ALL Animals As Sentient Beings – This Is HUGE

New Zealand has set an incredible precedent by legally ruling on what nature lovers already know to be true: that animals are sentient and have feelings in the same way that we do.

This marks an incredibly shift in public perception, where previously only some animals were given the benefit of protection.

The Animal Welfare Bill that passed last month will prosecute people in animal cruelty cases and ban animal research and testing. All hunting and capture of wild animals will be illegal.

“To say that animals are sentient is to state explicitly that they can experience both positive and negative emotions, including pain and distress,” said Dr Virginia Williams, chair of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. “The explicitness is what is new and marks another step along the animal welfare journey.”

“Expectations on animal welfare have been rapidly changing, and practices that were once commonplace for pets and farm stock are no longer acceptable or tolerated,” said Dr. Steve Merchant, president of the New Zealand Veterinary Association. “The bill brings legislation in line with our nation’s changing attitude on the status of animals in society.”

Hopefully the world will follow their lead!

That’s wonderful news! I live in Canada and I am hoping that my country, and every single country on earth, will also recognize, sooner than later, that all animals are sentient beings. Love you, New Zealand!

I live in Canada too…and hoping for the same outcome as well…it’s the first and foremost biggest wish/dream of mine and my fellow Vegans for this to manifest…NOW…but i’ll be patient for it to happen in the near future nonetheless… thanks much New Zealand for taking that most important first step in the direction of true ‘Harmony on Earth’ path… hope to wake up one morning to find that everyone else on the mother earth makes the Connection… p/h 🙂

Great! Now will New Zealand go vegan and leave all those sheep alone?

    • VeggieMan | May 6,2016

Yes, that’s all I want to know. Otherwise, to me its just a whitewash.

      • VeggieMan | May 6,2016

I agree. I doubt the country would go vegetarian/vegan. At least hunting will be illegal, which is some good news.

Are you for real? Yes lets remove a large portion of jobs and exports from a country and then see no real change world wide anyway because every one else is still eating shit loads of meat?

    way to go!!!

EU policy has so many opt outs in means very little – I certainly hope the New Zealand one has meaningful effect
Here is the intro to the EU wording “In formulating and implementing the Union’s agriculture, fisheries, transport, internal market, research and technological development and space policies, the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals, while respecting the legislative or administrative provisions and customs of the Member States relating in particular to religious rites, cultural traditions and regional heritage.”

Respect and admiration, from India! I sincerely hope that our country, and all others, will follow suit.

To borrow from Jamison Scala, it’s so disrespectful to make a mockery of the suffering of trillions of sentient animals by comparing them to plants. If we were talking about the suffering of humans, no one would ever say, “well, what about cucumbers?”

  • VeggieMan | May 6,2016

That is fantastic news. However, does that mean they won’t slaughter any animals anymore, or they won’t slaughter any animals
inhumanely any more? Which is it?

    • VeggieMan | May 7,2016

I’m with you, although I believe ‘humane slaughter’ is an oxymoron. There’s no humane way to kill. It’s never instant.

Merano Sheep also?? No more Muelesing?? Hopeful, but not convinced

  • VeggieMan | May 6,2016

This wonderful country has taken a big step for animals and I wish that people would stop finding something to gripe about instead of wishing NZ all the luck in the world for taking a big step.

  • VeggieMan | May 6,2016

It’s a huge first step to celebrate and communicate all over the world. And yet the remaining way is as huge, anti-specism is next step.

As a red indian from colombia i think it was about time that the little brothers realised something that should be part of our common sense. NZ you are the hope for a new world. Thank you from the animal kingdom
